All too often, people with their own agenda will seize on and exploit genuine instances of abuse and weave them into a narrative which is full of scary headlines and uncorroborated claims. This is aimed more at satisfying their own needs for fame and fortune than any wish to protect anyone. There has also been a proliferation of these sorts of conspiracy stories with the rise of the internet, and bizarrely, as with the Washington Pizzeria sex abuse claims, absence of evidence and rebuttal of allegations is actually seen as proof of their veracity, because the “deep state” has such all pervasive power.
As the unravelling of the Epstein story reveals, it is clear that much sexual abuse is the result of rich and influential individuals seeing themselves as being above the law, and having no need to follow traditionally accepted norms and standards of behaviour. Aside from that, most abuse is perpetrated by family members, or by individuals known to the victims, with no motivation beyond personal gratification.
I have no particular interest in Hull’s affairs, as you put it, but am interested in well researched writing, particularly on issues of general interest such as the power of the media and the creation of moral panics, particularly where this intersects with political opportunism, as was clearly demonstrated in Hull Stack’s earlier post on the same subject.
It would be unlikely that I would be aware of any local councillors in Hull as I don’t live there. I do not know my own local councillor’s name either.
I am also interested in the power of the media and how they can minimise or try to discredit survivors or refuse to tell the truth about current “independent” enquiry’s, how “grooming gang” victims (correct terminology group based sexual exploitation victims) and wether they have political interest’s. victims are being failed present day trying to navigate ongoing enquiries and engage but being excluded, not being able to get basic support help or therapy and being perpetually failed way after the initial abuse. This is known, but the story being ran is of one to discredit “grooming gangs” group based sexual exploitation victims, adding a air of conspiracy or caution relating it back to the “satanic panic”. Instead of calling out what is really happening.
But ask yourself why would a journalist when writing about “grooming gangs” write to discredit them.
In my view, despite being provided with evidence about survivors’ experiences and concerns regarding the inquiry, the reporting failed to engage with those issues and instead focused on challenging the credibility but tying the scandal to the likes of “satanic panic”.
I know all to well about political discourse around this issue .
